GALIA GLUCKMAN

BIOGRAPHY

BIOGRAPHY

Galia Gluckman produces large-scale multi-faceted artworks in her medium of choice: pigment ink on cotton paper and collage. Reflecting varied contemporary concerns, Gluckman highlights ongoing creative and social conversations, through her exploration of atmospheric and emotive themes. Wide ranging in their hybrid of environmental and social references, they draw upon contemporary notions of the passage of time, referencing the mixture of creative subcultures that ebb and flow through the limitless global community. The viewer is invited to consider the dialogue surrounding mass production versus the handcrafted, oscillate between an abstraction of nature and epic man made habitats and follow the artists’s reflections that address the tensions between modern day order and chaos in the world around us.

Born in 1973, Gluckman first qualified as a fashion designer, operating in London and New York before returning to Fine Art. Having relocated to Cape Town in 2010, Gluckman has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions both locally and internationally. Most recently this has included group exhibitions at Circa Gallery (Johannesburg) and at Circa London as well as upcoming presentations at the Cape Town Art Fair with the Everard Read Gallery in 2017.

Her first two person exhibition at the Everard Read (in dialogue with the artist Penelope Stutterheime), marked Galia's debut with the Gallery in March 2015.

In 2016, her work was 17purchased for the Presidential residence in Cape Town as part of the 'people's collection', as well as Spier (Spier Arts trust).  She is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, Dubai, Israel, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and USA.
