NEILL WRIGHT - A New Solitude
Aug 25 – Sep 24, 2022

Everard Read is thrilled to present A New Solitude a solo exhibition by Neill Wright.

“The current global situation is fraught with anxiety and distress; I wanted this body of work to be a complete escape from that.”

Neill Wright constantly documents the world around him through photography. Wright’s ever-expanding visual library of the everyday, underpins his painted works. The photographic images are digitally sampled, collaged, redrawn and simplified to create the compound compositions of his multi-layered paintings.

A New Solitude presents abstract and representational elements that co-exist in an unorthodox harmony, a collision of reality and imagination where the geographically impossible collapses space and distance and hints at volatility and chaos. This world is beautiful, energetic, and marked by abstraction, a place in which to get lost.

The sculptural elements of this exhibition exist as a form of detritus, a by-product of the painting process. In the studio, once a body of work has been completed and leaves the artist’s space for its next chapter, all that remains are a handful of ‘discarded’ objects which, in time, become isolated objects of nostalgia. They are a crucial part of the process of creating but are completely overlooked during the working process. Essential yet abandoned. By rendering them out of wood and resin, they are given new life as art objects themselves.

We invite you to the exhibition opening on 25 August 2022, at Everard Read Gallery.
