CURATOR'S CHOICE | John Meyer: Mandela - A Life's Journey

Ahead of Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July, Everard Read is proud to present a special selection of prints from John Meyer's historic Mandela: A Life's Journey series as part of the gallery's Curator's Choice programme.
The works are limited-edition prints from the 16 monumental oil paintings Meyer completed in 2017 on commission. The original paintings were first unveiled in a private exhibition at Everard Read's CIRCA Gallery before embarking on an international tour.
Rather than focusing exclusively on Mandela's political legacy, the series explores his profoundly human journey, offering a nuanced portrayal of South Africa's most revered icon. In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day—which honours Madiba's 67 years of public service and his lifelong commitment to human rights—the exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that individual lives can have on society.
Through his distinctive sequential narrative approach, Meyer moves beyond the conventions of archival imagery to imagine intimate, behind-the-scenes moments from Mandela's life. The series traces his story from childhood and early adulthood through the years of struggle, sacrifice, leadership, and ultimately the triumphs and burdens of the presidency.
The long-term vision for the collection of original paintings, is for it to continue travelling to leading public institutions and museums around the world.
As the original 16 canvases remain permanently together in a private collection, preserving the integrity of the narrative, this Curator's Choice presentation offers a rare opportunity for the public to engage with the complete body of work. The meticulously produced limited-edition prints on display are available for acquisition.
John Meyer is widely regarded as one of Africa's foremost painters, celebrated for his ability to capture both the physical grandeur and atmospheric essence of the South African landscape.
